Now: Creation Rock Drive and Tunnel
Click on photo to see yesterday's view.
Creation Rock Drive still leads visitors to the top of the Amphitheatre and the Visitor Center through this tunnel built by WPA workers during the Amphitheatre construction period (1936-1941). CCC workers gave the rock the name "Lizard Head" for the distinctive shape of the top.
The reds and purples of the rock are subtle and don't display as brilliantly in color photography as the eye perceives them. The yellow and pale green washes over the rocks are lichens.
